Comfort Ratings

If a bag has two temperature ratings, the comfort rating indicates the acceptable temperature in which you could keep warm wearing your normal bedclothes. The extreme or low rating is the acceptable temperature in which you could use it wearing more clothing for bed, such as thermals, fleece, socks etc.

We have been asked on numerous occasions to give a temperature rating for all of our bags. Unfortunately we cannot, as Ajungilak and Snugpak, two manufacturers dedicated to sleeping bag manufacture, state that children's body temperatures vary so much that they cannot give a satisfactory rating in the same way as they can for adult bags. We have to respect their expertise. What we can state is that all of the bags we sell will give a good degree of warmth and work well for purpose. Is the right size of bag important for your child?

A couple of years ago a petite lady came into our shop looking to buy a child sized sleeping bag for herself. She does a good deal of outdoor and barn camping in all seasons and was finding that adult bags did not give her sufficient warmth. She told us that putting a belt on the end of the bag, or folding it underneath, does not give her a satisfactory level of warmth either, as she is still not cocooned enough side-to-side by a large bag. She needed a smaller bag made to fit to give her warmth in colder weather. On a return visit to our shop, she told us that her new child-sized bag was giving her a lot more warmth and comfort than any she had had previously.

If you know that you are going to camp in colder weather, at altitude in summer, or in the UK in all but the best of the summer weather, we recommend that you buy a bag that is right for size rather than one which has lots of growing room.
